Authorises the supply of ellaOne (ulipristal acetate 30mg) and Levonelle (levonogestrel) [POM - £10 cheaper than the P] to women over 16 years of age. Both medicines are for emergency hormonal contraception within 120 hours (ellaOne) or 72 hours (Levonelle) after unprotected sexual intercourse (UPSI). Why this PGD

This is one of our most successful PGDs that we offer. EllaOne has been proven to be more effective 24 hours after UPSI than Levonelle, however it has not been fully adopted by the NHS because of increase costs involved. Using this PGD can give patients the choice and significantly reduce the probability of unwanted pregnancy.

Problems and requirements

It is estimated that nearly half of all pregnancies in England and Wales are unintended. While some pregnancies result from failure of a contraceptive method, most pregnancies occur either because no contraception was used or because the method was used inconsistently or incorrectly.

What type of pharmacy is this PGD suited to

Pharmacies which do a high volume of the [P] version of Levonelle or find that they are referring a proportion of EHC referrals because the patient falls outside of the Levonelle 3-day criteria.
