An overview of the ETool system

As travel health clinics have become an increasingly common feature of pharmacies in recent years, the time is right for a new modern way of offering patients this service.

The ETool is an innovative, digital system designed to help pharmacists set up a private travel vaccination clinic with minimum fuss and investment.

Patients who need to obtain protection against travel assosciated health risks can register their details online, or at the pharmacy, and based on their medical history and planned itinerary, the tool will determine which vaccines and/or anti-malarials are recommended.
The pharmacist is expected to supplement the information provided by the system, using their own knowledge as trained travel health clinicians, to help the patient decide which protection to get.

Once a decision has been made, the pharmacist selects, on the tool, the vaccines and/or anti-malarials the patient wants and a doctor will review the order and provide a prescription for the pharmacist to download and fulfil. From September 2017 pharmacists will have a set of ETool PGDs, removing the need for a prescription.

To use the ETool the pharmacist must have sourced and completed suitable practical and online training and submit a declaration of their competency.
The pharmacist will also have to view tutorials on using the system, to ensure they are confident when consulting their first patients.
Once these steps have been completed the pharmacist will be ready to launch their new vaccination clinic.

1. Pharmacist registers traveller

Pharmacists take the patient to the consultation room, log into their account and enter the patient's personal information, details of the planned itinerary, medical and vaccine history.
If the patient has already registered at home the pharmacist can ask the patient for their consultation code to locate their details.

 

2. Travel health advice

The system works out which vaccines and anti-malarials the patient should consider and the pharmacist offers further advice so the patient is aware of all potential risks.

 

3. Patient decides

Having received all the information on the diseases and vaccines/medicine, the patient tells the pharmacist which protection they want and the pharmacist enters the details of this decision onto the ETool.

 

4. Consent and supply

The system generates a summary of the consultation and a consent form which can be printed and signed or, if the patient has their own account, they can enter their password to give their consent.
The pharmacist then waits for the doctor to review and approve a prescription (from September 2017 the pharmacists will not need to wait for a prescription as they will have PDs) for the desired vaccines/medicine and administer the vaccinations, charging the patient accordingly.
